Firefighter Survival

Based on Chief John Salka's "Get Out Alive" program, this program is designed for self-rescue and rescue of trapped firefighters. Course content will enable firefighters to recognize the types of events encountered on the fireground that contribute to firefighter disorientation and/or entrapment; to have knowledge of what is necessary to ensure their safety and that of their partners or crew members; and to perform self-rescue techniques when disoriented, separated, or needing to exit a structure in an emergency. This course requires students to perform a number of practical evolutions with self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

Students participating in this course shall have completed The New York State Firefighting Essentials and Initial Fire Attack courses or equivalent. Nationally recognized Firefighter Level I certification may be substituted for the course prerequisites. Students not possessing these prerequisites will not be allowed to participate for their own safety.

This intensive training course was developed in response to the tragic deaths of many firefighters across the nation in the past several years.  Many of those who perished did so because they could not get out of the fire building or area where they were working.  We train our firefighters on confined space, hazardous materials, infectious disease control, and incident command but there is no training course that teaches our firefighters how to save their own lives, until now.  Firefighter survival is that course.

Designed For:

Fire service personnel

Course Length:

3 Units-9 hours

Prerequisites:

Firefighter I (1S). The nationally recognized Firefighter Level I certification may be substituted for the course prerequisite. Students must also be physically capable of wearing SCBA and possess current medical clearance for SCBA use. Students not possessing this prerequisite will not be allowed to participate for their own safety.
