Weekend @ New York State Academy of Fire Science

This event will include emergency personnel serving Cortland, Tioga, and Tompkins Counties. We need a minimum of 15 students per course in order for the course to be offered! We are hoping to make this an annual event and look forward to seeing you there.

When sending in your registration form ensure that: Registration Fee and Meal Costs are calculated and proper payment accompanies registration form,  1st and 2nd course choices are filled in. Course openings will be filled on a first come first served basis and where some courses have pre-requisites and also require a signed Training Authorization Letter. Be sure you meet these pre-requisites prior to applying and please provide a copy of certificates for pre-requisites.

Course Offerings

Engine Company Operations

This course will discuss and students will demonstrate a coordinated fire attack, acting as an engine company. Proper and effective hose-line advancement and placement will be discussed. Standpipe Operation techniques and skills will also be covered. This course involves one day of live fire training to demonstrate what was learned in the classroom.
 
Pre-requisites- Firefighter I/ or Equivalent, Signed Training Authorization Letter with SCBA Clearance.

Highway Safety for Emergency Responders

Students completing this course will have an awareness of the serious nature of highway crash scenes and the hazards associated with them. Students will have an understanding of the four phases of traffic control that take place in the first hour. They will also possess the ability to select and place the appropriate traffic control devices for various crash sites. Other topics covered are; stopping sight distance requirements for vehicles across a broad range of speeds, how to establish various traffic control zones, where to stand and how to direct traffic.
 
Pre-requisites- Scene Support Operations/Equivalent

On Scene Rehabilitation for Emergency Responders (OREO)


This course explains the why, when and how of rehabilitation for emergency responders. The course shows how and when to meet the requirements of NFPA 1500- Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health and NFPA 1561 Emergency Services Incident Management System.
 
Course Length-12 hours

Legal Issues for the Volunteer Fire Service
 
Introduces many of the legal concepts and issues that affect the volunteer fire service. Topics include an overview of the legal system, structure of and differences in fire departments and fire districts, organizational and membership issues, firematic training and operational liability issues, PESH and OSHA Compliance, apparatus and motor vehicle operations, legal issues in emergency medical service training and delivery of services, youth programs, role of fire department legal counsel and what happens when litigation strikes. Classroom work is combined with problem solving exercise's.
